Putting Mantras Front and Center

Richmond-based MantraDog has launched a new ecommerce platform to bring eco-friendly, sustainably sourced, non-toxic, personalized yoga mats to practitioners throughout the U.S. Co-founder Avi Gunzburg was inspired four years ago when he took up yoga to relax. “Yoga allowed me to center myself and realize what was important in life,” he says. However, “Everything about my practice centered me and took me deeper, except for my mat; it was the same mat as everyone else’s.”

Gunzburg found the perfect solution—a premium yoga mat with a natural rubber base and cork top that he could personalize with a mantra. Natural rubber is sustainably harvested from the sap of trees and natural cork is the bark from a tree that can be continuously harvested over 25 years. The rubber base on the bottom provides superior staying power on the floor and the cork on top provides excellent non-slip traction—even in hot yoga (natural cork gets grippier the wetter it is).

MantraDog lasers a mantra onto each mat, creating the personalized MantraMat. Lisa Rogerson, Gunzburg’s sister and long-time yoga practitioner, says, “Working together to help others find the power of yoga and using a mantra is such meaningful work.”
MantraDog also sells an all-natural yoga mat cleaner, Mantratology, as well as yoga gear and mantra bracelets.
