Natural Awakenings Richmond

Documenting Social Justice

In 2020, at the height of nationwide uprisings in response to George Floyd’s murder, Mending Walls started as a conversation between two friends—one Black and one white— about why the murder of a Black man by police was different this time. Artist Hamilton Glass gathered 30 artists and friends from various backgrounds and brought them together to have conversations they could translate into murals that would allow the public to connect. The project also recorded podcasts of behind-the-scenes conversations about the impacts of race, racism and social justice.

A documentary produced by Fuel19Red and a full-color hardbound book by Glass and photographers Katrina Jones and Brenda Soque present a picture of how it all came to be.

The book is available locally at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Museum of History & Culture, Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, The Valentine Museum, World of Mirth, Shelf Life, The Book Bar and online at NoHowBooks.com/store. The documentary is available at mendingwallsrva.com
