NOURISH+ Program Helps with Healthy Family Lifestyles

Dr. Suzanne Mazzeo

NOURISH+ is a new program that focuses on helping parents of children ages 5 to 11 establish healthy eating and exercise behaviors for their families. Through the program, parents will learn how to read food labels and teach children healthy eating and exercise habits, and receive a pedometer to track personal activity levels.

Developed by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as a research study, NOURISH+ is provided to parents at no cost. Dr. Suzanne Mazzeo, principal NOURISH+ investigator and professor of Psychology and Pediatrics at VCU, and her research colleagues are actively engaged in addressing the problem of childhood obesity by working with families to promote positive lifelong diet and activity habits. Evaluation of the program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Parents participating in NOURISH+ are compensated up to $235 for completing assessments at baseline, post-intervention, and 4 and 10 months after the intervention. Given the limited resources available in the community for comprehensive treatment of pediatric obesity, NOURISH+ fulfills an important need.
