Foot & Ankle Center Using Lasers for Toenail Fungus

Dr. Mitchell Waskin

The Foot & Ankle Center is the first practice in Richmond to treat toenail fungus with U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved lasers from Cutera and PinPointe. Podiatric Medical Director, Dr. Mitchell Waskin, served on a national advisory panel for the Cutera laser. He and colleague Dr. Jeffrey Frost have successfully treated hundreds of toenail fungus cases with laser technology.

Toenail fungus affects about 12 percent of the population. Left untreated, it can become painful and lead to social and work problems. Diabetics and those with weakened immune systems are at risk for more serious issues.

During the treatments, a laser beam is passed over the toenails, killing the fungi. Although the procedure takes about 20 minutes, it can take a year for a new nail to grow, replacing the damaged host nail. For those seeking instant cosmetic improvement, KeryFlex, a professional nail restoration system, is available at the medical-grade Foot & Hand Spa, located inside the clinic.
