Volunteers Needed to Serve Elders

Nov 03, 2023 10:32AM ● By Catherine Atienza
The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond (TSCOR) is looking for volunteers to teach classes in their
Open University and Lunch & Life series held in the fall, winter and spring. Teachers provide
instruction for one-hour classes, lunch speakers give 45-minute presentations with a short Q&A
and volunteers may select the topics.

TSCOR provides a place for older adults to help one another stay active, independent and
engaged through enrichment programs and volunteer service to their peers. They believe in the
potential of older adults to teach, learn, grow and give back to our community, while recognizing
the significant health benefits of remaining active and avoiding social isolation.

Dr. Elbert Cole, a minister in Kansas City, Missouri, observed that as individuals retired from
careers and moved into the next stage of life, they maintained a desire to continue growing and
contributing to society. In 1971, a community team created a new organization that provided
opportunities to meet these needs, and The Shepherd’s Center of America opened in 1975.

Annual membership is $25. For more information, visit tscor.org/volunteer/teach-a-class.
